Dolly Varden Char, (Salvelinus malma) and one Cutthroat Trout (Salmo Clarki) caught off of a beach in Frederick Sound. These fish were feeding on young Pacific (Sand) Lances emerging from a sandy beach. Dollys move between fresh water and salt water over the course of a year. In fresh water streams, in the spring, they target young salmon fry. In salt water, they are opportunists, moving along the coastline searching for food in a seemingly random pattern, thus their location is hard to predict for fishing on our trips. However, if we can chance upon them, they can provide some excellent fishing. Angling for these fish was very exciting, with a fish caught literally every cast. Sizes were in the 17″-20″ range. The Dolly Varden was named for a brightly dressed character in the 1841 Charles Dickens novel “Barnaby Rudge.
